Earlier in the week, I reported that we had been under considerable fire here of late. As usual, the readers of this list came through with many mails of support and prayers. As usual, most came to Mayme. I find it most heart warming that so very many good people we have yet to meet, have opened their hearts to our daughter. I will admit she has the capabilities of stealing hearts without even trying. I believe that is a gift from God.
As I reported earlier she hadn't been as eager to head to school in the mornings as she usually is. I hadn't pressed the issue, because I know my child very well. When she is ready to talk, she does!!! As I take her to the bus each morning, I have the opportunity of some serious one on one time. For this, I am most thankful. I believe if more parents took advantage of such situations, the youth of today would be better aware of the real world and what awaits them, and in turn they ( the kids) would be more likely to make a valuable contribution to society.
On these daily drives to the bus, we have talked about nearly everything under the sun from religion, politics, relationships, etc. Lately, there has been little said if anything.
Having stayed up way late into the morning, I was the last to get around this morning. So when I finally drug myself out of bed, Pam and Mayme were all ready for their day, and sitting at the table having coffee. " Good morning daddy" started my day, and rubbin my eyes, and shaking the cobwebs from my brain, I replied "hey dooster" (Pam has always called her Mayme Doo, I shortened it to dooster" lol.........Sittin down at the table, I looked over at Mayme. She was all ready for the last full day of school!Sporting jeans, and a "Dixie Girls" T shirt, battleflag scrunchie in her hair, battleflag necklace, and bracelet, I thought to myself hmmmmm what have we here? After a quick cup of coffee we headed out the door to school. Having turned in her books already, she was carrying her favorite beatup binder from last year. It is quite a sight to see in itself, for it is held together by "Dixie Outfitters" stickers as well as a SLRC thumbs up battleflag sticker, a "keep cops of donuts " sticker as well as a half dozen other Southern heritage stickers accumulated over the past year or so. Folks send them to her all the time, she loves em, and of course displays them with pride.
The ride to school was like "old times" instead of silence, she chatted all the way. Discussion ran the course of whether we should get out of the UN, to how expensive is insurance for old firebirds and cameros? As we pulled up to the drop off area, she picked up her notebook, checked her hair in the mirror, grabbed the cookies she was taking for her home economics class party, gave me smooch on the cheek ( she hadn't done that at school in a very long time) and said "I'll see you at 3 dad". As she walked away towards the bus, I could faintly hear " oh I'm a good ole rebel................" As my eyes watered up and I pulled away from the curb, I thought to myself " well, Mayme is back in true form".....I give the credit to God, and to all those on this newsletter who once again took the time to send a few words of support and prayer to my family over this past week. As head of the household, I am most greatful once again.
