26th Georgia Volunteer Infantry
ROSTER OF COMPANY "D"
This Company was successively known as old Company F, and new Company C, 13th regiment Georgia Infantry and Company C, which became Company D, on May 8, 1862, of the 26th regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry.
The officers were Captain John C. Nicholls, 1st Lt. Harley Jones, 2nd Lt. James Knox, and Jr. 2nd Lt. John F. Highsmith.
The Seaboard Guards were organized on July 29, 1861 at Camp Hazelhurst in Waynesville Georgia as Co. "D" 26th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, CSA. The men of this unit were from the Waynesville area including Camden and Wayne Counties. John Knox was promoted to Captain on Mav 8. 1862 when Captain John Nicholls resigned.
The 26th was part of the Georgia Brigade that left Georgia for Virginia in 1862. The 26th Georgia consisted of over 1100 men.
Captain James Knox, originally of Co."D", was one of the 78 survivors at the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Captain Knox being one of only eight officers left was in command of the Regiment at that time. He returned home after the war, being one of only 4 survivors left of Co."D" and went on to be a prosperous citizen of the community.

HERRIN, James H. - Born December 23, 1839. Enlisted as a Private on Oct. 9, 1861, in the Seaboard Guards. Wounded, and surrendered, at Tallahassee, Fla. on May 10, 1865. He was paroled at Thomasville, Ga. May 25, 1865. He is buried at Rob Lewis Cemetery at Raybon.
