On January 15, 2005, at the regular UDC meeting in Nahunta, Larry Mercer was presented with the distinguished honor of being awarded the Vietnam Cross of Military Service in honor of his Confederate Ancestor, Richard Lavender and for his loyal service in Viet Nam.

Larry's wife, Kaye, along with Camp Commander Tom Lavender and Camp Adjutant Jerry Watkins were on hand to witness this great Honor.

Larry is a very dedicated Life member of Camp 2022 and drives 2 hours to attend most meetings and then 2 hours back home. Larry also attends most functions of the camp to include activities such as cemetery clean ups. Larry has attended many "flagging" and has, at times, been the only "flager" in attendance yet he has always stayed the duration and has always stood his ground to defend our confederate heritage when confronted by the opposition.

I am very proud to know Larry and Kaye and hope to continue my friendship with them for many years to come.
